In a press release dated May 20, 2014, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has proposed a rule to help providers make use of Certified E.H.R. (Electronic Health Record) Technology.

The proposed rule would let eligible professionals use the 2011 Edition CHERT or a combination of 2011 and 2014 Edition CEHRT for the E.H.R. reporting period in 2014 for the Medicare and Medicaid Incentive Programs, basically extending Stage 2 of Meaningful Use. Since it’s inception in 2011, more than 37,000 hospitals and eligible professionals nationwide have been recipients of the incentive program.

The proposed rule also includes language that would formalize CMS and ONC’s (The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology) previous intention to extend Stage 2 through 2016 and begin Stage 3 in 2017.
